UFC 173 Gets Junior Dos Santos vs. Stipe Miocic
UFC 173 just got a little better yesterday, when UFC officials revealed a heavyweight matchup was added to the card between former champ Junior Dos Santos and rising name Stipe Miocic, a pairing that was initially reported by the Las Vegas Review.
A bout Dos Santos (16-3) and Miocic (11-1) makes a lot of sense for both fighters, so the matchup should come as no real surprise to fans of the heavyweight division. Dos Santos is widely regarded as the second best talent in the heavyweight class, but has been unable to overcome the road block that is Cain Velasquez. With names like Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne all tied up, Miocic is a logical choice.
A win for Dos Santos would afford him some breathing room in the ranks of contenders, after having lost two of his last three bouts to champion Cain Velasquez in devastating fashion. For Miocic, a win put him on a three-fight victory streak inside the octagon, and would completely change the complexion of the heavyweight division. With victories over Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga, Miocic has already proved he can hang with some of the more dangerous fighters in the division, and a win over Dos Santos would skyrocket him among the list of top title contenders.
Both fighters are revered for their skills in the striking game, however Dos Santos will likely be favored for many reasons, including the immense power held in both of his hands. The fight between Dos Santos and Miocic will be the co-main of the upcoming UFC 173 event, which will be headlined by a middleweight title fight between Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida.
UFC 173 is set to take place on May 24th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Along with the main and co-main event of the evening, the card will also feature TUF winner Chris Holdsworth as he takes on Kyung Ho Kang, among other intriguing matchups.
