Why The Tommy Toe Hold Show is The Best Thing To Ever Happen to MMA

He’s bald, disproportionately muscular, humbly self-deprecating, knows his submission holds and is damn funny, and for once we’re not actually talking about Joe Rogan with those qualifiers. We’re talking about Tommy Toe Hold, or more specifically, The Tommy Toe Hold Show, and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to MMA.
Alright, so maybe “Best thing to ever happen to MMA” is stretching things a bit, but TTTHS is certainly the best thing to ever happen to MMA entertainment. In a period of time where the only true MMA laughs are with Chael Sonnen on the odd Fuel show (a channel I still don’t have, apparently), Tommy Toe Hold stands out as fresh, witty and more importantly connected to the conversation.
Not every single Tommy Toe Hold show is timeless, not every joke will make sense a few months down the line and not every topic will even hold a viewer’s attention beyond the moment, but that’s precisely why TTTHS is MMA’s most brilliant bit of weekly YouTube entertainment. The show is timely and in-tune with what the fan conversation is at the moment. Make no mistake about it, that is certainly not easy to do unless you’re a real MMA fan that spends as much time lurking Sherdog or the MMAUnderground as you do writing scripts and taking years off your vocal cords with each episode.
The conversation in TTTHS isn’t just about the loud voices in the community either, there’s plenty of nuanced humor in every episode (even if some has to be recycled now and again) that you may not even catch right away, but might make sense later when the odd story or thread cross your path. If there’s another MMA show out there that feels even half as personal and intelligent as The Tommy Toe Hold Show, then I certainly haven’t seen it.
Whether it’s bringing on real fighters to guest star on the show, or taking time out of his day to pull some questions out of his sack, there’s something of interest for every die-hard MMA fan from Tommy, which makes Wednesdays (when new episodes air) one of the best days of the week. And if you were thinking we only love TTTHS so much because we’re both rocking the poorly drawn mascots, well, you’d be wrong. Behind the low-budget animation of Tommy Toe Hold there’s an even lower budget heart, and it makes the experience all that much better.
Keep up the wildly mediocre work, @TommyToeHold. We love you for it.
